An international year of prayer for Morocco

Week 35

Riffi Berbers

Fiercely independent, the million and a half Riffi (ree-fee) Berbers are more likely to be antagonistic to the Moroccan government than other Berber peoples. In fact, many Riffi Berbers would rather speak Spanish than Arabic, although some still respect Arabic as the language of Allah and the Qur’an. Their lighter complexion probably came from interbreeding with the Vandals soon after the demise of the Roman Empire and still sets them apart today. Isolated in the Riff Mountains of northern Morocco, Riffies have become accustomed to doing things their own way.

Marginally Christianized during the early middle ages, when Islam raged through North Africa in the 7th and 8th centuries the Riffi Berbers adopted Islam. Only one known Christian believer existed among the Riffi Berbers in Morocco a couple of decades ago. Today missionaries are working with growing numbers of them.

Tens of thousands of Riffi Berbers work in Europe where they are often more open to new ideas. Christians in Europe are now focusing on them. Many have heard and some are responding to the Gospel.

"Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other." Isaiah 45:22

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God." Matthew 5:3-9

  • Pray for development and distribution of effective Christian materials in the Riffi Berber language.
  • Pray Riffi Berbers will be delivered from their pride and hostility.
  • Pray many Riffi Berber communities will respond to the gospel and Riffi churches will be established.
