An international year of prayer for
Morocco
| Week 38 |
MarrakechThe name "Morocco" is derived from Marrakech. So much has the city become synonymous with the nation to visitors over the centuries. Berber dynasties that embraced fanatical forms of Islam founded Marrakech in 1070 AD and went on to help extinguish what little remained of the ancient North African church.Modern Marrakech is a city of an estimated one million people. It attracts many visitors due to its fascinating colorful bazaars and spectacular location within sight of the towering snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas Mountains. Its famous old city square, the Djemaa el Fna, is like a living theatre. Storytellers, snake charmers, fortune readers, traditional folk singers, acrobats and a variety of other exotic impromptu performances and activities take place there every day. Tourism and handicrafts are mainstays of its fragile economy. Unemployment remains high. There is much sexual immorality. But many here are open to the Gospel. Currently, there are a number of small expatriate and Moroccan fellowships in the city. Yet God desires to raise up a united church, pure and holy, made up of house churches in every neighborhood. Such a church could play a major role in reaching the entire region from the Atlantic coast through the High Atlas Mountains. "To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers - not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve." 1 Peter 5:1-2 "You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." 1 Peter 2:5 Pray for a hundred expatriate and Moroccan workers to plant house churches in every neighborhood of greater Marrakech. Pray for the churches to be strong, holy, purified and united. Pray for anointed mature leaders to be raised up for the Moroccan churches. Pray for justice, prosperity and those working to improve Marrakech’s economy. |
