An international year of prayer for
Morocco
| Week 42 |
MusicMorocco has passed a rich musical heritage down from generation to generation. Rhythms, melodies and treatment of subject vary widely from region to region and differ greatly from music produced in Arab nations further to the east. Some forms of Moroccan music foster orthodox Islamic belief. Every year there is a Festival of Spiritual Music in the city of Fes that celebrates this type of music but also provides an open door for Christian performers to sing Gospel music. Throughout the year, visiting Christian singers traveling and performing in Morocco may have many opportunities to share the gospel. Some Moroccan music is directly linked to trance dancing and the summoning of spirits. This has drawn considerable interest from Western rock singers who have come here since the sixties. The Gnaoua Festival in Essaouira focuses on this type of music. As for Moroccan Christian music, there are annual events where believers are trained to write worship music. Excellent material is being produced. In addition, some Moroccan Christians have recorded Moroccan style music for a wider non-Christian audience. Culturally appropriate music is a powerful means to present gospel truth in a way that it can be received into the heart and remembered. Its tremendous potential must be unleashed in Morocco. "Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs." Psalm 100:2 "I will sing a new song to you, O God; on the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you." Psalm 144:9
