An international year of prayer for Morocco

Week 15

Tangier

The gateway to Africa and a meeting-place of two seas. Tangier was an important trading post of the Phoenicians, a Roman provincial capital, and a bustling port while Southern Spain and North Africa were both in Moorish hands.

Built on a series of hills around a bay that bears its name, Tangier is a port city that lies in the shadow of the Rif Mountains. In 1923 it was made an "international zone" and only reverted to the Kingdom of

Morocco in 1957. Since then, it has grown rapidly and now numbers over a million inhabitants.

Immorality and drugs are major problems in Tangier. Nostalgic pride has combined with despair concerning present circumstances to paralyse the wills of many. However, the government is seeking to
restore the international character of the city, and hope is beginning to be reborn. Although Tangier was
neglected under the old regime, the new king is spending more time in the city. This too has had a positive effect on the quality of life.
During its period as an international zone, Tangier was a spiritual lighthouse from where the Gospel was broadcast by radio into both Morocco and Spain during the Franco era. A mission hospital established in the city reached many until Moroccan independence brought restrictions upon evangelistic activity.
"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give

up." Galatians 6:9

"Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop -- a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown." Matthew 13:8

Pray that along with new hope for their city, many people in Tangier would take hold of new hope in Christ.
Pray God will raise up a praying church in Tangier that will be representative of its population and will become a spiritual lighthouse for the whole city.
Pray new fruit will be born from seeds planted by generations of missionaries who worked for many years in Tangier when there was freedom to do so openly.
