An international year of prayer for
Morocco
| Week 19 |
EconomyMorocco's economy has been largely agricultural based for many centuries. It is estimated that around half of all Moroccans are involved in agriculture. A decade of drought has caused a major drain on the economy, as the nation has had to rely on foreign agricultural imports. Tourism plays a vital role in Morocco's growing economy and is an important source of hard currency. Morocco attracts millions of tourists each year. They come primarily from Europe to enjoy it's beauty, history, food, climate and culture.Tourism creates numerous jobs in the services, handicrafts, and clothing industries. Although Morocco is rich in natural resources including being the number one exporter of phosphates in the world, these resources are largely untapped. Oil and natural gas were discovered recently and there is hope that these yet untapped resources will provide much-needed national income. Unemployment figures are high and many are under-employed. As a result wages remain low and often provide barely enough income to survive. More than half of those under the age of 25 are without work, a figure that may worsen unless the economy is developed more effectively. In the late 1990’s one Moroccan government source estimated that some ten million Moroccans were living on the equivalent of one U.S. dollar or less per day. Not surprisingly, the poor economy negatively impacts the primarily urban church. Some walk miles to a meeting because they cannot afford public transportation. Often the elderly or infirm are unable to attend meetings at all for the same reason. Many believers are young singles that, without jobs, cannot marry and start Christian families. "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10 "To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his." Job 12:13 Pray for Moroccan Christian men and women to find jobs that will allow them to be independent and self-supporting. Pray for wisdom for those responsible for the planning and development of the Moroccan economy. Pray for the creation of millions of decent paying jobs in Morocco |
