An international year of prayer for
Morocco
| Week 26 |
TetouanTetouan is situated in the midst of greenery because its region receives more rainfall than the rest of Morocco. Nestled against a mountain, Tetouan is a pearl of white that today spills down onto the plain toward the Mediterranean Sea as Riffi Berbers move into the city from the mountains to its east.Founded around 1305 by the Merinid sultan Abou Tabit, the town served as a base for operations against Spanish Sebta on the Straights of Gibraltar and later became a pirate's lair. As a result the Spanish made life difficult in Tetouan and finally destroyed it. However, the town was re-populated in the 16th century b Moslems and Jews who were chased from Andalucia during the inquisition. The town prospered in the 17th century under the reign of the sultan Moulay Ismail. Tetouan was the capital of the Spanish Protectorate in the last century. Its architecture is reminiscent of the Spanish region of Andalusia with its kiosks, fountains and flower boxes. Situated at the point where the old and modern parts converge, Hassan II Square constitutes the heart of the city and is an ideal meeting point for those taking an afternoon stroll. Tetouan deserves its reputation as a center of culture and refinement. The city contains many monuments including a fort, well-preserved "old city" walls, the 17th century restored Khalifa's palace, and numbers of mosques, fountains, and caravanserai. A university, two museums, conservatory, College of Fine Arts, and a School of Moroccan Art are among the cultural establishments of which Tetouan can be proud. "Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed." Psalm 11:11 "Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16 Pray for ongoing efforts to reach the people of Tetouan with the Gospel. Pray for the unity of believers in Tetouan and for boldness in their witness. Pray for the establishment of growing maturing churches. |
