An international year of prayer for Morocco

Week 28

Jebala Berbers

Jebala Berbers are the original inhabitants of northwestern Morocco. Their population may be as large as two million people. Most live in rural areas, few live in cities or larger towns.
The Jebala are a very colorful people. The women wear a striking red and white striped traditional woolen skirt called a "mendil". They are agrarian and depend on small plots of wheat or vegetable gardens.

Some raise sheep. Jebala Berbers speak colloquial Moroccan Arabic with their own distinctive singsong cadence and particular accent.
Currently there is little evangelical outreach to this people group. Due to their isolated living conditions in inaccessible villages, they are truly a hidden people group. However, once a week Jebalas walk down trails to their local weekly market in the middle of nowhere to sell their wares and to buy needed supplies.

Their biggest "felt need" seems to be medical. Jebalas have little access to trained medical personnel and rely much on herbal medicine. Their brand of "Folk Islam" includes many animistic practices. Meeting their medical needs through clinics that provide services for minimal charge in towns near their villages or through the use of properly equipped vans in their weekly markets may be one means of reaching these beautiful people for the Kingdom. Trained medical personnel gifted in evangelism would find receptive hearts in those to whom they minister as they build friendships and earn the right to be heard.

"Heal the sick who are there and tell them, "The kingdom of God is near you."" Luke 10:9

""But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds," declares the Lord." Jeremiah 30:17

  • Pray for the Jebala Berbers that Christians in their region would reach out to them in their villages and weekly markets.
  • Pray for the provision of needed medical care in rural areas.
  • Pray many members of this "hidden" people group will be saved and gathered into Jebala fellowships in every Jebala village of Morocco.
